Digital Music Sales Just Dropped for the First Time Since iTunes

In 2013, digital music sales declined for the first time since Apple launched the iTunes Store 10 years ago. Are streaming music services like Rdio and Spotify to blame? Nielsen SoundScan just released its annual music sales numbers and while none of the news is good, the digital music sales numbers are particularly troubling to the recording industry


WSJ: Google and Audi Are Working on In-Car Android

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Google has been working with Audi to develop in-car entertainment and information systems based on Android—and the pair plan to make an announcement at next week's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The newspaper explains that the announcement will also detail collaborative efforts with other manufacturers—it specifically names Nvidia, for instance—in order to "establish Android as an important technology for future vehicles." According to the Journal's sources , the new Android initiative will "allow drivers and passengers to access music, navigation, apps and services that are similar to those widely available now on Android-powered smartphones." Last June at its 2013 developers conference, Apple announced its plans to integrate iOS into the car dash , and has garnered support from BMW, Mercedez-Benz, GM and Honda in the process.

Apple’s iPhone Found to Violate Three Patents in US Court

Word just came down that Apple's iPhone has been found to infringe on three patents held by MobileMedia , according to Bloomberg . It's not clear which patents are in question, but in 2010, MobileMedia, a company owned by Sony, Nokia, and a company that licenses MPEG patents, took Apple to court over 18 patents dealing with screen rotation and call rejection
